exOS enables a PLC programmer to integrate Linux software easily into a PLC project. Similar to including an IEC library, it allows to add pre-packaged Linux software ("exOS Packages") to the Logical View of the AS project. exOS Components may then be created and configured out of the exOS Packages, and those components may then be assigned to the according exOS target system - similar to the way an IEC task is assigned to a CPU in the Software Configuration.
As all Linux-related parts are hidden via standard Automation Studio configuration pages, a PLC programmer does not need any know-how about Linux or Linux software. The whole machine automation project can therefore be handled from a single point via Automation Studio.
